Work is…
…interesting.
It’s generally pretty busy between the manager part and the regular work part.
For the manager part, it’s tough because if left to my own devices, I’d probably haze people pretty intensely before hiring them.
It’s not about being mean or anything, it’s about seeing how much tenacity they have.
I also get annoyed at people when they interview not really for the specific position, but for a job.
Any job.
I tell youngins to RESEARCH a company, and it’s not so they can spout random facts to impress a recruiter or hiring manager, it’s to understand the work and really consider if you REALLY want to work for said company.
Core values, rankings (beware of these, most companies pay for these rankings), any information about a day in the life, talking to people who work there…all REALLY important to understand to see if it would be a good fit for YOU and YOUR priorities.
Too often I get people in who say all the right things, then end up leaving within a few months because of incompatibility. That’s a waste of their time and a waste of the company resources.
It’s also tough because you sometimes can’t ask the more character telling questions that would really get to whether or not they’d be a good fit.
Or specific skills questions. (Some hr issues supposedly…)
I’m staring to prefer getting subs from head hunter agencies over hiring straight to the company. You can get them to source for really specific types of people as well as include personality and skills test that we wouldn’t be able to do if hiring straight to the firm.
Still though, interviews are interviews of the company as much as it is us interviewing you.
Prepare accordingly.
In related news…
There’s a potential opportunity for me to travel abroad for work…maybe even twice. (Thailand and South Africa).
I’m curious if it’ll really go through as I’d go due to one of my resources leaving the firm before then.
It would be pretty neat though…a week in both those places?
I mean…I GUESS I’ll take one for the team…
