History in the Making

I swear, I swear this is the last time (for two weeks at least I promise) I’ll even say anything about this…but gosh darn it…

Cutie Patootie

He’s just too cute! I want one!

In other news…

It’s been a fun entertaining weekend. It’s the final push before finals so I thought I would enjoy this last weekend of youthful festivities. Two different parties, two different fraternities.

I accidently locked my keys in my car Friday night which was unfortunate. With the help of a very nice Kappa and a random nice fellow in the parking lot, I was able to acquire a hanger and break into my car. Thank goodness for these things:

My Security

Or else my po bug would be gone. That car is not as secure as I’d like it to be…

Saturday, a few of my ls’s, some their friends and I made a trip to Athens for an Alpha party. I don’t know why people insist on not turning on the air conditioner in places where there are hundreds of black people. They know we retain heat….

(okay that was a somewhat ignorant comment I admit, but still…for real UGA? For true?)

Sunday was spent handling situations including but not limited an entire inch of exposed new growth on my head (due to sweating the previous night) and refocusing my mind for the next two weeks. It’s going to be tough, but I need to keep my tradition of making the deans list…

And to the members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, I tried to leave a message for those of you that I know, but if I missed anyone, Happy Centennial Founders Day. You were the first of all Greeks and we all appreciate what you started.

Skee-Phi!

Did You Know

The Phirst Pham Relationship is more than about Alpha Phi Alpha and Alpha Kappa Alpha being the first of their kinds?

Journey back to the campus of Howard University in the fall of 1907, when Cornell University student and Alpha initiate Eugene Kinckle Jones arrived on the campus of Howard University to establish the second chapter of the very young fraternity known as Alpha Phi Alpha at the request of the mother chapter Alpha. Included in that sixteen charter members was George A. Lyle, a native of St. Louis, Missouri and a junior. Lyle’s girlfriend Ethel Hedgeman was also a native of St. Louis. Upon arrival at Howard in the fall of 1905, both Lyle and Hedgeman were very active on the campus and was one of the more popular couples.

The obvious fact is that Hedgeman was keenly aware of George’s participation in the new fraternity. AKA Founder Margaret Flagg said” Because of Lyle and his connection with Alpha Phi Alpha, Ethel conceived the idea of the sorority.” With her insight and vision Hedgeman approached her friend Lucy Slowe with the idea of establishing a similar group for women. Hedgeman and her nine friends engaged in research of the sorority idea, ascertained interest from other female students in the Liberal Arts College and submitted a proposal and constitution the Howard University Board of Trustees for the privilege to establish a sorority, the first in the school’s history. They met on January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was born.

Both Lyle and Hedgeman graduated in the Class of 1909. On June 21, 1911, they were married.
