Things that make you go Hmmm…

Have you ever wondered…

Here do “country” accents come from?

Has anyone REALLY won a Publishe.rs Clear.ing Hou.se Sweepstakes?

Why is Disney’s Hann.ah Monta.na so popular?

Let’s find out!

ON THE NATURE OF SOUTHERN ACCENTS

According to Wikipedia:

The Southern dialects make up the largest accent group in the United States. Southern American English can be divided into different sub-dialects, with speech differing between regions. African American Vernacular English (AAVE) shares similarities with Southern dialect due to African Americans’ strong historical ties to the region.

Southern dialects substantially originated from immigrants from the British Isles who moved to the South in the 17th and 18th centuries. The South was known for being largely settled by English from the South West – the West Country. (The West Country dialects of England also have similarities to the Southern dialects.)

Do YOU pronounce the following words differently?
Pen/Pin
Guard/God
Marry/Merry
Feel/Fill
Poor/Pour

ON THE NATURE OF PUBLISH.ERS CLE.ARING HOUS.E

My mother has been participating in PCH campaigns for almost 30 years and it made me wonder has anyone really won before?

I scoured the Internet for proof and found exactly 2 stores of people actually winning, both two years ago. One lady won a million, and another won 10,000. The strange thing was that there weren’t many stories about them so it seemed kind of false to me.

Mostly, I found stories about PCH being sued for deceptive practices. One man, 87 years old, spent $50,000 with PCH with the idea that buying things would increase his chances of winning!

PCH gets over 350 million in revenue a year! Crazy scams…

ON THE NATURE OF HANN.AH MON.TANA

Now I’ve been hearing about a Disney show by the name of Hann.ah Mon.tana. It’s on TV almost constantly, and she’s recently been in the news as her concerts are selling out within minutes. I decided to see what this chick was all about myself so I spent some time watching the show this weekend.

. . .

I must admit, it is an entertaining show. It’s about a 14-year-old named Mi.ley and her double life as an ordinary girl and a “rock star.” Her father, her real life father and back in the day country star Bil.ly R.ay Cyr.us, is a retired country singer and current music writer. The show documents her teenage adventures.
Miley herself is talented, likable, and easy to watch. Although southern accents usually rub me the wrong, hers is somewhat understandable and maybe even…charming? I could see how she could get a huge following of tween girls and scary males waiting for her to turn legal.

It’s like she’s Lindasy Lohan before cocaine, alcohol, and Hilton-hood.

The thing that blows me away about this enterprise though are the Hanna.ah Mont.ana concerts. They’ve sold out in almost every city and the tour hasn’t even started yet! I looked on ebay the other day at ticket prices, and some are already selling for almost $2000! AND PEOPLE ARE BIDDING ON THEM TOO!!!

I guess they underestimated the demand for these shows, but so would I…I mean it’s a DISNEY “kid pop” concert…it wouldn’t be able to fill up say Philips arena would it?

. . .

Maybe so…last year a Han.nah Mont.ana show attracted over 70,000 people to a Houston show…

Isn’t that crazy?!
