Happiness and the Scientific Method

Alright…taking a scientific approach to this happiness thing.

Problem : I’m having trouble enjoying really anything.

Research : I work a lot and when I’m not working, I either spend time thinking about work or sleeping. It’s Halloween season, one of my favorite times of the year and I can already tell I’m going to blow through it and look back like “why didn’t I enjoy it?!”

Hypothesis : If I deliberately schedule time for non-work related things for at least 2 hours every day, this will help balance my schedule some and give me some down time for enjoying life a bit more.

Experiment : I have ENN going on for the Halloween season. I will watch all the specials I suggest on the day that I suggest them.

Observation : I will check in on the blog every Friday with a stress-level update to see if this process decreases “how much I really care at the end of the day” levels.

Conclusion : TBD

Analysis : TBD

AND SO IT SHALL BE!

This should be interesting. Is there an online test to quantify mood that you can take every Friday? Establish the baseline first.

How about this test, published in a peer review journal, for keeping this assessment ‘scientific’?

        The actual test is here.

        Perfect!

Probably too late to count for this week, but I got 3.83

Neutral – not really happy or unhappy. A score of 3.5 would reflect an equal number of happy and unhappy responses. Exercises designed to increase happiness have been tested in scientific studies and have been shown to make people lastingly happier. Try some!

        Not far off, 3.72.
