Unmentionables fandom rivalries…
SO there’s an unspoken rule in certain fandoms….
In the purple world, you do not mention MJ.
In the MJ world, you do not mention the purple one.
It’s kind of a thing.
And it was super apparent among family over Thanksgiving break.
Family is SUPER team MJ. The music in my sister’s car over the course of 3 days was a deluxe MJ collection that had a bunch of background info from Quincy J and the de boys. My dad hushed people to hear the deets of how certain songs got made.
I did play them a bunch of P stuff while we were at my house, but it was carefully selected. I was playing the jazzier stuff for them and not like the stuff that’s my actual favorite cuts…because it’s…adult? In a way? This is my favorite P song of all time hands down. It’s…special theme wise.

Legit was RAISED on MJ…but tbh, purple one has eclipsed him at this point. I do have the MJ opus and a TON of stuff around my house for him…have been to more MJ concerts than Prince ones…have more vinyl for mj and j5 but….
He’s edged out now.
I was listening to some mj stuff and heard him asking the engineer to turn things up or down…and in the back of my mind I was like “but boyfriend would turn it up and down himself because his mic would be above the controls there after a certain point in his career…”
They are different but…I’m sorry, for me…P wins.
I feel like MJ’s stuff was more universal and P’s is more personal in a way? And also for me tons of respect for his musical talent. I LOVE MJ but Prince kinda did literally ALL of his music stuff…writing, playing instruments, producing, like…all of it….literally ALL. OF. IT.
Interestingly though, if you like them both for real reasons you don’t hate the other…there’s mutual respect.
MJ is play cousin. P is my boyfriend and the love of my life.
I think the only reason why people aren’t staunchly fans of both is because there’s isn’t enough money, brain space, or hard disk space to support both those fandoms 100%.
And for the most part, liking one more than the other has NOTHING to do with the actual artists and everything to do with what you project on them….
