I blame the internet

As much as computers are pretty much extensions of my body, I do recognize that they are such a danger to manners and decorum, among other things.

They give people the opportunity to hide behind a persona they can easily create…and thus creates a false sense of what’s “normal”.

That “new normal” is then extended out into real space, and you get conversations, thoughts, and behavior that used to happen in private, or in appropriate circles, out for everyone to see.

Examples :

People broadcasting their sexual preferences…when before just promiscuous people did that.

Why does EVERYONE need to know that? Why not just the people who are privileged enough to engage you in that way or even people in your close circle who could advise you about such things? For chicks, keep it in your girlfriend circle…or between you and your doctor…or even better, between you and the person you’re being sexual with. For dudes, again keep it to your dude circle/locker room/frat debrief/your chick/etc. The mixed company conversations on this topic IGG me. Really what purpose does it serve other than telling people your personal business? How is that advantageous? Congrats, now random people know what you’re like in bed, or even worse, know that you LIE about what you’re like in bed….

People airing out why their ex wasn’t all that/how much they miss their ex/etc for everyone (or really just their ex) to see…

Talked about this tons of times before. Talk to someone who cares, and I don’t intend that in a mean way, I mean seriously…talk to someone who cares about you and will help you process that. Most other people will use it against you, especially that ex, or potentials who get scared off by emos, OR predators who prey on vulnerable people.

People talking about work or organizational issues in an obvious way that people can trace back to their jobs and specific people

People get fired over this. It’s almost another form of the previous example as well. If you don’t like your job, quit…or talk to someone who will help you put things in perspective. Just complaining isn’t going to help the situation get better….and will label you as “one of those”…

Lack of discretion in all these situations. That’s really the issue.

If you don’t want people in your business, don’t lay out your business for people to see.

Definitely unfollowed a few people today after their commentary on their appreciation of a certain aspect of female private parts. Keep that disgusting stuff in the locker room.

Also CANNOT with the Greek sites that base their entire relevance on ridiculing each other…or even the self-congratulatory ones where they pat each other on the back for meeting fools on their levels…

The rude, lude, morbid and racist are largely insecure attention seekers, and comprise, I suspect, a small (but growing), highly-visible, proportion of the internet demographic. Their behaviour seems to be contagious though. Care to take a guess at how much worse the online social landscape will be in, say, 10 years?

I actually feel like it could get better if these near future Dystopian movies are any indication. I hear we’re all going to become stoic sheep who are basically cogs in the wheel of productivity, if that, since robots are taking over.

Only halfway joking…(Spent the weekend watching movies from this list http://snarkerati.com/movie-news/the-top-50-dystopian-movies-of-all-time/ )

Which ones did you watch? There are a few glaring omissions. I would have included the cult classics Dr. Strangelove, Terminator, The Manchurian Candidate, and Westworld before at least half of the others on the list that I have seen.

THX 1138, Idoacracy, War of the Worlds.
I’ve seen the one’s you’ve mentioned except Westworld though.
I’ve seen a bunch of the ones on the list as well. The original Metropolis is one of my favorites. Creeped me out first time I saw it.

Interesting study, results unsurprising. Most relevant bit, taken from here, below.

Researchers at Western Illinois University studied the Facebook habits of 294 students, aged between 18 and 65, and measured two “socially disruptive” elements of narcissism – grandiose exhibitionism (GE) and entitlement/exploitativeness (EE).

GE includes ”self-absorption, vanity, superiority, and exhibitionistic tendencies” and people who score high on this aspect of narcissism need to be constantly at the centre of attention. They often say shocking things and inappropriately self-disclose because they cannot stand to be ignored or waste a chance of self-promotion.

The EE aspect includes “a sense of deserving respect and a willingness to manipulate and take advantage of others”.

The research revealed that the higher someone scored on aspects of GE, the greater the number of friends they had on Facebook, with some amassing more than 800.

Ha! Going to look up the original now. Was just debating with someone about this the other day.
