Sooooo…yeah….

Remember how I said I was going to natural and how I would get a weave in the meantime? Well…. yeeeah, it didn’t work out.

How about, I had that weave in my hair for barely even a month and my hair grew an inch and a half! Those tracks were hanging on for dear life! I just couldn’t rock it anymore. As fast as my hair grows, I’d be at the hairdresser every two weeks to get it tightened…and that equals more money…

I’m also discovering, that though I swore up and down that I was doing it for me, I lied, I did it for someone else. F that though. The credo this year is “ME fo ME”!

The problem remained though that I still had a problem with breakage. Originally, a secondary reason for the foray into weavehood was to give my head a rest to curb it. Before, every time I brushed my hair, a lot of hair came out with it. (Well not A LOT, but more than I was comfortable with.) I decided to return to the chemicals for now and try the natural thing later when I have time to experiment.

So I moseyed on over to Sally’s and got my usual Olive Oil Relaxer kit. I also asked the sales person to recommend a good treatment for damaged hair breakage. She pointed me to a line of products by the name of Aphogee.

I took a look and saw a protein treatment for damaged hair. “That looks perfect!” I thought I’ll get that. I asked the lady if it would be safe to use that right after a relaxer and she it would be.

So I moseyed on home did the chemical thing on all the new virgin hair (alas I really like the curl pattern too…)! Washed it out…did the neutralizer…washed that out. Tried the protein conditioner…

AND IT SMELLED LIKE BOOTY! I was like, “da hail?!”

I followed the directions though and sat under a drier while looking up whether or not it was really safe to use this stuff after a relaxer (after the fact but whatever…)

HORROR STORIES!

STORIES OF THE STUFF MATTING PEOPLE’S HAIR AT THE ROOT!

STORIES OF PEOPLE HAVING SUPER HARD HAIR AFTERWARDS!

WARNINGS THAT IF YOU TOUCH YOUR HAIR WITH THE CONDITIOR IN IT, IT WOULD SNAP OFF!

WARNINGS THAT IF YOU DON’T CONDITION THE CRAP OUT OF YOUR HAIR AFTERWARDS, YOU’LL BE SORRY!

I WAS TERRIFIED!

I gingerly got from under the drier and roll stepped (for the marching band people out there) my way to the shower to wash that isht out.

Then I used the thick olive oil conditioner that came with my kit… added some real olive oil on top just for good measure…and sat under the dryer for 30 minutes while reading more horror stories.

After washing that out, I got curious and decided to blow dry a small part rather than waiting for it to air dry…

And the result?

IT WAS AMAZING!

My hair was super silky and soft! I didn’t even put anything in it…just blow dried it and it was as if I’d flat ironed it! I cut out a small piece of hair wet hair to test elasticity, and that isht stretched like a rubber band! My hair! Hair that would fall out if you looked at it wrong! It’s now like the He-Man of hair! I’m a believer!!

And did it solve the problem of breakage?

Over the past week or so, I’ve lost MAYBE 20 hairs…if that much (I’ve counted!)

JESUS WEPT!

Next I’m going to try Ultra Black Hair TM’s product line, both to support a Black business and because I hear her product IS the business. I think I’ll do her 365 day challenge…we shall see what the long term effects of that will be.

More about protein treatments (from motowngirl.com) :

Protein conditioners are designed to help build up, repair, and overall make your hair stronger. They help fill any empty gaps and damage that your strands may have. The treatments don’t need to be left on for longer than the recommended time on the bottle – it would be overkill and is not necessary. If you have generally healthy hair, you don’t need to do it more than once a month.
